Huge Earthquake Hits Chile

A devastating earthquake struck Chile early Saturday morning, toppling homes, collapsing bridges and plunging trucks into the fractured earth. A tsunami set off by the magnitude-8.8 quake threatened every nation around the Pacific Ocean — roughly a quarter of the globe.

Experts warned that a tsunami could strike anywhere in the Pacific. Emergency officials set off shrieking alarm sirens across parts of Hawaii, which could face its largest waves since 1964 starting at 11:19 a.m. (3:19 p.m. CST), according to Charles McCreery, director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Dance Team State Champions

The Sheboygan South High Varsity Dance Team competed in the WACPA State Dance and Pom Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The team placed fifth out of 16 teams in the Pom Division. Later in the day the team was crowned State Champions in the D1 Hip Hop Division. South High School beat out 13 other teams including Sun Prairie, which was the reigning State Champions for the past four years. South’s Hip Hop score of 501 out of 600 was also the top score for the entire day.

This is the best any South Varsity Dance team has placed in 8 years. The last time this happened, their Coach Carlee Reinamann was a sophomore dancer on the Varsity team.

THON

Generally the stereotype is that college students are selfish and don’t give to others, but students at Pennsylvania State University have given their time to raise millions of dollars for children with cancer. On Friday afternoon, students kicked off the 37th annual Penn State Dance Marathon, known as THON.

In 1973, a small group of dedicated Penn State students held our first Dance Marathon. That year, 34 dancers participated and raised $2,000. Since then, THON’s presence in the Penn State community has grown exponentially. THON now has 15,000 student volunteers, 700 dancers, and has raised more than $61 million, benefiting The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Children’s Hospital.

To learn more information about this event, please visit www.thon.org. This event will be broadcasted live on AsherTV.com starting at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
